5 Positives from the Week

Click to link up with Lydia
I missed doing my fives last weekend, so I was considering doing positives from both weeks, but honestly, I can't even remember what happened a couple days ago, so I'm just going to stick with the 5 that I CAN remember from this week.  I really need to write these down as they happen so that I don't have to rack my brain trying to remember them ;-P

Also, no vlog this week because I am suffering from crazy allergies and I'm all stuffed up and puffy-faced feeling:

Allergy face is icky :(
[one] I had a JOB INTERVIEW!!!  Even if I don't get the job (but I REALLY want the job!), I am just so thankful that I had the opportunity to interview.  I've sent out who knows how many applications, and never hear anything back, so to get a positive response was a HUGE answer to prayer.  I did a phone interview early in the week and then was invited to do a 2nd face-to-face interview over Skype :)  Hopefully I'll find out more this week!  Keep me in your prayers!  This job would send us back home to I'm excited at the prospect!

[two] #shereadstruth has been on my positives almost every week since I joined in...can you tell being in the Word is having a huge influence on my life?!  We finished the "Soul Detox" reading plan and started a new plan a couple days ago, "Living the Surrendered Life."  If you haven't checked it out, I strongly encourage you to do so.  Even if you don't participate in the social media aspect of it, just being challenged to be reading the Bible DAILY is something that we all need.

[three] I'm not usually a PC gamer, my heart belongs to consoles :), but I reactivated by Steam account the other week and downloaded a bunch of games.  One really cool game that I devoured is called, Braid, in which you manipulate time to help the character reach his goals.  Another game that I was obsessed with a couple years ago is now on Steam, so I got addicted started playing again.  It's called Puzzle Pirates - and it's just that; you are a pirate and you solve puzzles to complete various tasks on a ship whilst you pillage about the seas.  It's awesome.

I need to update my portrait...I have an awesome outfit and hat now ;)
[four] My dad's birthday is also in June, so for Father's Day, we kids decided to get him a bunch of books as a joint FDay/BDay present.  Ever since reading The Hunger Games, he's been on a reading kick, which is super cool.  One of my favorite memories as a kid was listening to my dad read The Hobbit before bed...with all kinds of fun voices :)  His favorite book is To Kill a Mockingbird, so we got him a special edition of the book AND the DVD as well :)  We also got him The Giver, A Wrinkle in Time, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, and Unbroken.  He was so happy to get all these books so it made me happy!!

[five] I've needed a flash drive for quite some time since we are constantly moving research data from computer to computer in the lab, but I hadn't gone out to buy one.  Well thanks to Groupon, there was a deal to get the Mimico Star Wars flash drives for almost 50% off!!  And my AWESOME brother bought one for me!  I went for R2-D2, because, c'mon, he's a DROID so obvi he's gonna protect all my data files :)

beep boop beep boop!
[six] OK, here's a bonus 6th positive.  Matt started blogging again and he writes all kinds of awesomeness about his thoughts on music, faith, and life.  So go check out A Sound Philosophy!!  He even started doing his own 5 positives!  Wahoo!

Science Saturday 2.10: Stem Cells, Sputnik, & Star Trek

A 10-year old girl from Sweden suffering from blockages in her hepatic portal vein (blood flow between the liver and the gut) received a transplant that used her own stem cells to grow a new vein.  A vein was removed from a cadaver and stripped of it's cells, leaving behind only a structural protein scaffold.  This was then covered in stem cells from the patient's own bone marrow.  Usually during transplants, there is risk of the body rejecting the "foreign material" - but because the stem cells are from the patient, the grafted vein was taken into the body without any need for immunosuppresant drugs.  Very cool!

With the discovery of large viruses, further research has shown that they can be infected by smaller viruses coined as virophages (Latin "viro-" virus; Greek "-phagein" to eat).  It has been generally accepted that viruses are non-living infectious agents, simply acting as a "machine" to take over it's host's system and replicate.  However, discover of the virophage Sputnik, which infects giant viruses, suggests that viruses may be living organisms - with the ability to get sick like we do.

Afraid of needles at the doctor's office?  Researchers at MIT have developed a "needleless" injector - much like something you'd see Dr. "Bones" McCoy use on Star Trek.  The injector uses a high pressure system to "shoot" the medication painlessly into your skin.  The can administer various dosages at various depths of the skin tissue.

Set Apart & Ready

In our #shereadstruth study, we've been taking a look at some of the cultural toxins that may affect our lives.  Just because the world says that something is OK, doesn't necessarily mean that it is OK for us spiritually.  I love the memory verse that was chosen for this week:

See links below to download for your iPhone/iPad lockscreen!

It reminds me of the song "Refiner's Fire" (which was a CLASSIC back in our college Intervarsity group)'s one thing to identify the toxins that might affect your life and letting God purify your soul.  But once we've cleared our minds of these things, there is an even greater next step - it's to BE READY for what God calls you to do.  We are meant to be a people of action!  Are you ready to live the life you were called to live?

(I've never heard Jeremy Passion before, but I love The Katinas...
this version of Refiner's Fire does NOT dissapoint!!  Glad I found it!)

I've made my memory verse design available as a download for iPhone or iPad wallpapers to help you memorize this scripture throughout the week.  Or, if you don't like my design, check out the awesome "official" wallpaper they designed over at!  I think I might put one of each on my devices :)

5 Positive Thing-a-roos

Here we are - another week over, another set of five positive things :)  Excuse my wonky hair in this video...we were just watching a movie and I was laying down on the couch so my hair got all flipped to one side, haha.  Also, sorry I'm talking a mile a minute...I just drank a bunch of soda! Gershwin Revisited

Next step toward getting back into playing the piano seriously. So, it's been 4 years since I performed this at my senior recital and I was surprised to realize how much was retained by muscle memory! I rehearsed with the score a few times today, but am pretty confident in playing it memorized.

Now I just need to clean up those killer arpeggios, runs, and octaves :-P  The second run through is definitely better. I'm posting this in hopes that by the end of next week, I will have resolved some of these issues and will have a more solid performance of the piece. You all need to hold me accountable!!

Oh, and I discovered how much better my iPhone video/audio is than my laptop...HA!  And don't you like how JoJo added in some percussive dogtag jingles?! She's a natural musician :)

In God I Trust

I am feeling so blessed by the #shereadstruth community and feel myself growing closer and closer to God through His Word.  Our first weekly memory verse went out yesterday, and as a way to help me meditate on it daily, I decided to make an iPhone/iPad wallpaper...since we head to our phones to check out the YouVersion Soul Detox plan for our daily reading :)  Feel free to download and use throughout the week!  I'll be making new ones each week for every memory verse we have!  Be encouraged!
